Sony System Restore Vista
How to run the System Restore or Startup Repair feature when the operating system will not start.
The Windows Vista® operating system provides a recovery environment which can allow you to use the System Restore, Startup Repair, Command Prompt, Windows Memory Diagnostics or Complete PC Restore feature when the operating system will not boot.
IMPORTANT: This option is available on most VAIO® computers, but not all. If the Repair Your Computer option in not available in step 3, this procedure is not supported on your computer model.
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and then at the VAIO screen, press the F8 key.
3. In the Advanced Boot Options screen, verify Repair Your Computer is selected and then press the Enter key.
4. In the System Recovery Options window, click the Next button.
5. Next to User name: , click the down arrow , and then click to select an account with Administrator rights.
6. Next to Password: , type the appropriate password for the account selected and then click the OK button.
7. In the Choose a recovery tool window, click to select the appropriate option below:
8. Startup Repair can automatically resolve certain issues that can prevent the operating system from starting.
9. Windows Complete PC Restore will restore a previous backup of the computer created using the Windows Backup and Restore Center.
10. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool can determine if any problems being experienced are caused by issues with the computer’s memory.
11. Command Prompt can be used by advanced users and technical support personnel to perform troubleshooting on the hard drive or the operating system.
12. VAIO Recovery Center will launch the VAIO Recovery Center application.
F10 is also an option for recovery console,it depends on your make and model of Vaio.
Another Method is:
Step 1
Click the “Start” button on your Task Bar. In Windows Vista, the “Start” button will look like a blue button with the Windows logo.
Step 2
Locate and click the “Control Panel” option located inside of your “Start” menu. This will bring up your “Control Panel” screen.
Step 3
Double-click the “Vaio Recovery Wizard” button. This will bring up a window.
Step 4
Follow the instructions given during the Vaio Recovery Wizard. When prompted, confirm that you want to reset your Vaio to its original factory settings.
Step 5
Allow the computer upwards of an hour to properly restore itself to factory settings.
Tips & Warnings
- If you still have the Sony Vaio Recovery disks that ship with all new Vaio computers, you can ease the process by simply inserting these disks and following their instruction. Back up any files that you may want to keep before the restore. Once the restore begins, any files not backed up will be lost forever.
- DO NOT allow your computer to run out of battery power or otherwise shut down during the restoration process. This can do serious damage to your computer
